Social Network With A Twist Debuts

The next evolution of Social networking web sites arrived this week with the introduction of RedcarpetSuperstar.com. The new site allows anyone to create an online celebrity with their own unique "stage name", videos, photos, blogs and merchandise. Members of the site can also create stories and blogs which interact with other characters created by members.

Members of Red Carpet Superstar can also help out their favorite charities by creating shirts, mugs and other merchandise with their characters photo printed on. Proceeds from the sale of the merchandise goes to the the charity of their choice.

"It's a fun way to raise awareness and money for charity organizations," reports Craig Neverson, RedCarpet's VP Of Brand Partnerships. "Philanthropy is no longer just for Brad and Angelina."

Hollywood is also using RedCarpetSuperstar to find "the next big thing". Remember how famous the sock puppet from the now-defunct Pets.com company was for a time?  Or how about the Dancing Baby or Ronald McDonald?

"Popular culture icons and characters spring up from all corners of our media, books, movies and the web," said Neverson. "Red Carpet creates a showcase for the next Paris Hilton to emerge".

Letting people be someone else is big business these days. Take a look at how Halloween has evolved from a chance for youngsters to get some free candy into the second largest holiday for retailers (next to Christmas). Sales for Halloween will top 5 billion dollars this year due to adults attending parties, wearing costumes and decorating their homes.

Red Carpet Superstar takes their slogan, "Who do you want to be today?" to the next level by integrating stories, video, photos and merchandising for the user to create the next cultural icon.

Funding for Red Carpet Superstar comes from private investments from individuals from the media sector.

5 Minutes With George Holloway

George Holloway is the President of Red Carpet Superstars. He spoke with us about the creation of this new social network website.

Question: George, how did the idea of Red Carpet Superstar evolve?

A: I was at a digital media conference talking with some talent agents who were attending to find out what the "next big thing" was going to be in the digital media sector. We started talking about where the next big media celebrities would come from. I thought that the Internet was going to be a growing source of celebrity. We put together a partnership to explore ways of discovering the "next big thing" and Red Carpet Superstar was born from there.

Question: How this Red Carpet Superstar different from sites like MySpace or Facebook?

A: Most social networks are all about tellling others about yourself. Red Carpet is about telling others about a fictional character. It's not about who you are-it's who you'd like to be. The other distinction is the charitable aspect of our site. We thought people would like the ability to come up with a crazy character, create merchandise featuring their crazy character and then raise money for their favorite charity. And we were right. It's a really popular feature of Red Carpet.

Question: How do people think up their characters?

A: I believe they come up with characters the same way they pick out Halloween costumes. It's an extension of our personality. Remember when you were young and thought you'd grow up and be a baseball player or a cowboy? You get to be the ball player and cowboy on Red Carpet. Some people are even turning their pets into celebrities on our site. I see a lot of dogs and cats popping up as Red Carpet Superstars.

Question: Speaking of celebrities, how does Hollywood's talent agencies benefit from the Red Carpet Superstar partnership?

A: The talent agents use Red Carpet as a showcase for new talent in the same way they used to hang out at the comedy clubs. They are always looking for talent they believe has commercial potential.
